31 days of Bat

Well I did not know about this and I found out the very last day that comic book artist Chris Samnee was making a drawing for every day of October – the central theme was Batman.

This is the 4th time he has done this and the prompts he used for each art piece has been suggested by Samnee’s fans on his Instagram account

Believe me its not easy to do this every day and be creative and punctual, I’ve tried it by participating in Jakes Parker’s inktober event and could not keep up.

I think who ever can accomplish this by producing for every day an image with such a good result must have a great set of skills and talent which Chris Samnee has proven he has time and time again with all the comics he has done.

Have a look at all the art pieces which I found on Chris Samness twitter account

Amazing stuff!

If you are interested in owning one or more of these stunning art pieces of Batman you will be able to find them soon on eBay, just check Samnee’s social media profiles for updates

I do believe though that events like this are a unique opportunity for us aspiring comic book artists.

We can study and learn from them on how to be creative and sketch something by using one word and also to develop our drawing and inking skills.

And yes it’s worth trying something like this, it’s self training and fun!

Tasmar’s fine fan art

Wouldn’t you like to see one of your favourite comic book artist draw with there own unique style a comic book character?

A comic book character that you are very fond of, well Tasos Maragkos also known as Tasmar is doing exactly this the past four weekends!

Every weekend on a Saturday he posts on Instagram and Facebook fan art of some of our favourite comic book characters

He started with Nada Overdrive

He continued with Asterix.

Than he went onto Popeye.

And the previous weekend he did a character from Lucky Lucke

I’m a big fan of Tasmar’s comics and l do like his style, I’m just waiting to see what comes next so I can choose a fan favourite fan art

I strongly suggest you pop over to his profiles on Instagram and Facebook and check it out!

Ken Garing on Planetoid

Ken Garing took some time from his busy schedule to answer several questions giving us some insight on the how’s and whys of his comic Planetoid!

I thank him for that and I really appreciate it!

How hard was it to do a comic book solely on your own?

It’s hard in the sense that it’s a lot of work. The actual making of the comic is mostly enjoyable, but there just a lot to keep track of. You have to be your own project manager and keep tabs on a lot of loose ends.

Making a comic from story to the lettering is something we usually see in European comic creators, so I have to ask who and what are your major influences story and art wise?

There are many influences. For Planetoid I looked at a lot of Italian comics, work by Serpieri, Liberatore, and Sergio Toppi. Also, Japanese artists like Otomo and Nihei. In terms of the story, Frank Herbert’s Dune was very influential.

Planetoid in its story has some strong moral issues about life and society how much was it a comic where you wanted to make a statement or just a story that you’ve been wanting to say?

There were certain themes regarding power, exploitation, community, etc that I wanted to explore from the outset but I’m reluctant to verbalize them in any detail. The story, imagery, and everything else was borne of those central themes.

Planetoid ends with issue 5, is it possible that we are going to see any future stories based in this universe and the current cast of characters?

Yes. There are two more arcs planned as well as some one-shots that will flesh out the back stories of some of the characters.

Any chance of seeing Planetoid in a collected edition soon?

I believe the collected trade paperback will be available in July.

Lastly would you like to tell us about any project you currently working on and if it’s about Planetoid?

The publisher of my next project will make an announcement at C2E2 in Chicago next week. It’s not Planetoid related.

Thank you for your time Ken!
